Late in our development of Recoil Riot, we hired on Nolan to take over our UI. Previously, as it had been shared between several people who did not have it as their main focus, it had been in kind of a rough state. However, in a 4-month period, Nolan took on a complete art rework of all of our central menus and UI navigation. Not only did he do a fantastic job, he managed to take on other additional work for the team at the same time! I’d heartily recommend Nolan for UI Design on any future projects..

I’ve been working alongside Nolan on our DigiPen GAM 300 team for the past 2 months, where he’s been working as the project’s creative director and lead designer. During this time, he’s put in fantastic work in these areas and with helping me on production tasks. He’s extremely motivated to get work done, from going above and beyond with the project’s game design document [a document that could have been a few pages, but with him making a comprehensive design bible] to pumping out quick iterations of the game interface. He’s a great source of feedback, especially on a team of mostly programmers. His clear insight unhampered with design terminology allows him to communicate his design mindset well. Overall, he’s a cooperative and energetic designer who has been an asset to the team; I look forward to continue working with him throughout the rest of this project.

Nolan and I first met while he was a student in the Digipen class I teach about Game feel and how it relates to User Experience. In that class we do three big projects. The students create a Main Menu, a HUD and a small game project that uses gameplay to sell an emotion or sensation.

What I learned about Nolan. through the time I spent getting to know him in class and through reviewing his completed work, is that he has an excellent design sense and a unique voice that made his work standout from everything else.

He is great at finding thematic elements to link his work with the subject of the the game in clean and interesting ways. It’s easy to make a UI/UX experience that is thematically linked to the IP, but it is significantly harder to do that in a way that benefits the experience instead of making it more cumbersome. I watched Nolan pull that off time and time again.

On top of Nolan’s skill, he is humble and excited to learn and grow. He takes feedback very well and is always looking to learn from both his peers and his mentors. Honestly, it is that trait that I have found to be most beneficial to those just getting started in the industry.

Nolan has a bright future ahead of him, especially if he is given opportunities to learn and grow, as I know that he will make the most of them. I hope that you will see the spark in Nolan that I do, and will take the opportunity to help bring all his talent to bear. I expect that he will makes us all very proud with what he goes on to accomplish.
