For this small project, my assignment was to pack as many evocative and atmospheric features into the smallest gameplay environment possible. Every feature was designed with the intention of making the user feel timid and helpless. Gameplay is bare-bones with a shaking ball of light for the player that sploshes around in rain as they walk. If the player holds still for more than 5 seconds, they start shivering and eventually coughing from the cold.
Rain from multiple particle systems gives the user variety in their experience with this environment. Slower frequency water droplets overlay the player’s perspective which pulses at the rate of a weak heartbeat. I composed an oppressive and moody instrumental song for this demo as well, which plays in the background. This song incorporates the rain sounds that play in the scene so that I can keep pushing the density of this demo even further over the single week that I had to worked on it.
